THE family of a woman who died when her motorised trike hit a wall and overturned have paid tribute to her.

Gwenda Ward, of Stanley Way, Billy Row, Crook, County Durham, was travelling on a Rover Diablo trike motor vehicle when the accident happened.

The 59-year-old died at the scene on the A689 at the Newton Cap Viaduct, Bishop Auckland, shortly after 1pm on Monday, June 3.

In a statement her family said: “We are devastated by the loss of a beloved wife to Les, mother to Katherine and Gareth and grandmother, as well as friend to many.

“Gwenda was an enthusiastic motorcyclist who lived her life to the full and she will be sadly missed.

“The family would ask to be left in peace to come to terms with this tragic accident.”

An investigation has been launched as police try to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police said she was travelling north towards Toronto and had just reached the bridge when the trike veered across the road hit the kerb and the bridge parapet.

It overturned before rolling back onto the main carriageway.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw the trike shortly before the accident is asked to call the collision investigation unit on 0191-3752159.
