NEW MARSKE Harrier Dominic Shaw snatched victory in a thrilling, record-breaking finish to yesterday's Middlesbrough College 5K Riverside Run.
The 24-year-old Teessider was given the verdict by the race judge after clocking exactly the same time as Morpeth's Great Britain international fell runner, Nick Swinburn, second in the race last year.
Shaw ran a personal best and new course record by nine seconds time of 14 mins 43 secs, three seconds faster than in his previous race over the distance, the Armagh International on February 14. He finished third in the race last year (15 mins 14 secs), won by Great Britain international Ian Hudspith, sixth this time and first over-40.
Third place went to unattached Ethiopian Paralympian Wondiye Fikre Indelbu, running in his first competitive road race since the summer games.
Indelbu won silver in the T46 men's 1500m at London and stayed in the UK to claim asylum, with the Home Office placing him in Middlesbrough, where he went on to win his last 17 5K park runs in Middlesbrough's Albert Park.
Tyneside soldier Michelle Hodgkinson won the women's race, beating Wallsend clubmate Stacey Rogers by 55 seconds.

n After three consecutive park run victories, Claremont road runner Brendan McMillan successfully defended his title in the George Ogle Memorial multi-terrain six-mile race at Swalwell.
McMillan clocked 32 mins 1 sec, 31 seconds faster than his winning time last year, to beat Elswick over-45 fell runner Philip Sanderson by 17 seconds.
Durham City Harrier Katherin O'Mahony, fourth last year, ran two minutes faster to notch her first race victory, beating vSunderland Stroller Ashleigh Thorpe by over two minutes.

n Double middle-distance gold medallist Markhim Lonsdale moved to second in the UK under-15 800m rankings and third in the 1500m lists after his record-breaking performances in the North-East Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.
The 14-year-old Crook schoolboy, the North-East and Durham Schools cross country champion, clocked a pb 1 min 59.19 secs over 800m at the Tyneside track to eclipse a 38-year-old record by two seconds, while his 1500m time of 4 mins 10.5 secs was 4.2 secs faster than the old championship record set in 1987.
Lonsdale, now running for his local club, Crook AC, is second in the UK 800m under-15 rankings to Newcastle Staffs runner James Fradley, who clocked 1 min 59.12 secs in a BMC meeting at Milton Keynes two weeks ago finishing fifth in a race which included under-20 and under 17 athletes.
