AN English Defence League protest in Hartlepool passed without incident today (Saturday) when more than 80 supporters marched through the town.
The members and supporters held a minute’s silence at the town’s cenotaph in memory of Drummer Lee Rigby who was murdered in Woolwich last week.
The march was organised by Craig Owens, of the EDL, who said afterwards: “It was a terrific show of support for Lee Rigby by our members. It was an unbelievable turnout and shows the depth of feeling in the town.
“The march went without incident, despite some people trying to antagonise us as we walked to the cenotaph, and the minute’s silence was respected.
“We are proud to pay tribute to a fallen soldier.”
Somebody had already laid several bouquets of flowers and wreaths at the cenotaph before the EDL protesters arrived.
There was a small police presence in Church Square as members started to gather at around midday before setting off to the cenotaph in Victory Square.
The protesters, some carrying the flag of St George, walked silently to the cenotaph before paying tribute to Drummer Rigby.
