MEDIA students about to start a new chapter in their lives have launched their own magazine.

Pupils from Guisborough’s Prior Pursglove College designed, wrote and edited ‘ERA’ which features articles on holiday destinations, fashion trends, local nightlife, music and festivals.

The business-minded teenagers, who are studying for a National Diploma in Media Studies, even sold advertising space to local businesses to fund the magazine and are selling copies for £1 to cover the production costs.

Emily Wilson, who was the magazine’s editor, is aiming to enrol on a Broadcast Journalism degree course at Salford University this year.

“The whole experience was so professional from top to bottom. Essentially we got to experience what it is like to put a proper publication together which will definitely help with my career ambitions,” added the 18-year-old from Redcar.

Assistant editor, David Pottinger, added: “The project has given me a greater idea about structuring articles and formatting for a professional publication. It was also useful to look at the view of the end reader when we produced articles.”

The 18-year-old from Acklam, Middlesbrough, is heading off to York St. John University to become a primary school teacher but plans to continue writing by setting up an online blog.

Media Studies teacher, Carol Hale, said: “They are all talented and will progress in whatever career area they choose. I’m amazed at how well they have done and the quality of the finished product.”

The ERA team also created also created a website and blog to accompany their magazine which is available at: eratwentythirteen.blogspot.com
