A NEW neighbourhood watch-style scheme to protect the beauty of Durham’s Heritage Coast has been unveiled.
Durham Coast Watch aims to bring together residents, visitors, Durham Police, Durham County Council and landowners such as the National Trust and Durham Wildlife Trust.
It aims to help reduce the environmental crime, anti-social behaviour and vandalism, which occasionally affect the coast.
Peterlee police neighbourhood Inspector David Coxon, said: “Unfortunately, from time to time, anyone enjoying the Durham Coast may also see the results of crime or anti-social behaviour.
“That’s something we’re all keen to reduce and why Coast Watch is needed.
“Things have improved tremendously in recent years and we’re asking local people and visitors for their help so we can make things better still.
“Working in partnership through Coast Watch, we aim to increase awareness of the damage caused by environmental crime and ensure visiting the Durham Coast is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
He added: “If the incident is in progress, contact 101, which is the non-emergency number. We’d ask for as much information as possible and all calls can be anonymous.”
The Coast Watch team would like to hear from anyone who has seen criminal activity or anti-social behaviour, or its resulting damage, including flytipping, badger baiting, illegal vehicle use, air guns, hunting with dogs or fires.
Durham Heritage Coast runs from Salterfen Rocks, near Ryhope in the north, to Crimdon Beck in the south.
To report damage caused by crime or for more information about how to get involved with Coast Watch contact 03000 268131.
