A non-swimmer who jumped into the sea from the pier at Saltburn had to be rescued by police.
The male got into immediate difficulties after jumping into the water at around 6.45pm tonight (Monday, May 27).
An RAF rescue helicopter was scrambled and two RNLI Redcar lifeboats were launched within eight minutes of being alerted.
However, as they sailed towards Saltburn ther received a report that police officers had managed to get the male out of the sea.
Dave Cocks from Redcar RNLI said: ‘Fortunately police officers were quickly on scene and they were able to help the male from the sea.
‘Although the weather has been very pleasant over the past couple of days, the North Sea is still treacherously cold at this time of the year. Survival times are very limited, particularly if a person is in the sea without proper protection from clothes or a lifejacket.’
