HUNDREDS lined the streets in Barnard Castle and Richmond today (Monday, May 27) for their respective Meet processions.

Both fancy dress processions managed to draw the sunshine and escaped the Bank Holiday showers which arrived a little later in the afternoon.

More than a dozen floats taking part in Barnard Castle Meet passed through the town to the delight of those lining the streets.

A fire engine led the parade, closely followed by the Barnard Castle Meet Queen float, Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band and Startforth Sweeties.

Organisers hailed the weekend a huge success and said the committee will take a few weeks off before turning its attention to next year's event.

Chairwoman Rachel Pweddle said: "It has been really good. Everything has gone to plan. The weather doesn't seem to have put people off.

"We have a good plan in place and we will use it again when looking at the next one. We get a lot of help from volunteers, which is great and it is nice to see we have the support of the community."

The Barnard Castle Meet contains a packed programme of events, including a fairground, live music, pet show, chicken chucking championships and crowning of the carnival queen.

Meanwhile, those who turned out to support Richmond Meet were treated to a colourful fancy dress carnival procession.

Various entertainments continued through the day, including music and dancing, and that followed an afternoon of fun on Saturday at the town's Friary Gardens.

And throughout the weekend there was also top-quality two-wheel action organised by the Richmond Cycling Club.
