A MAN is in hospital with serious burns after being found on fire in the front garden of a house in Bishop Auckland last night.
Durham Police said an officer on patrol on the Woodhouse Close estate discovered the 30-year-old man at 8pm.
He is now being treated for "significant burns" in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
A spokesman for Durham Police said: "The full circumstances have yet to be determined."
A joint investigation between the police and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is now underway.
Detective Inspector Caroline Dawson said: "This is an extremely distressing incident for family, friends, and people who have witnessed it.
"We are doing everything we can to understand what has happened."
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has any information, is urged to call police on the 101 non-emergency number.
