WITH Gareth Breese available again, Durham face a selection dilemma ahead of today's YB 40 match at home to Derbyshire.
Breese has missed the last two games in the competition with a side strain and another off-spinning all-rounder, Ryan Pringle, staked a strong claim for a regular place in last Sunday's defeat by Hampshire.
In a game in which runs were scored at almost seven an over, Pringle conceded 40 in eight overs and also demonstrated his powerful hitting with a rapid 26.
Breese is in a 13-man squad which also includes Callum Thorp, who has played little one-day cricket in recent years but has bowled with remarkable economy in the championship this season. In the game against Middlesex, which was completed on Saturday, he conceded 39 runs in 24 overs.
With one win, two defeats and a no-result, Durham need to beat a Derbyshire side they haven't met since 2007, other than in the Twenty20 Cup.
The biggest threat is likely to come from the two West Indians, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chesney Hughes, at the top of the order.
Chanderpaul, now 38, helped Durham to win the Friends Provident Trophy in 2007 and also played for part of the following two seasons, when they won the championship.
He recently played in his 300th first-class game and among others who have achieved that landmark only six have a better batting average than Chanderpaul's 56.19.
Derbyshire are expected to include Sunderland-born paceman Mark Turner, who has also played for Durham and Somerset. But they are without Wes Durston and Tony Pallodino through injury.
