POLICE say they expect two rival demonstrations to pass off peacefully this weekend as concerns are heightened by the murder of a soldier in London.

The North-East branch of the far-right English Defence League is holding a demonstration in Newcastle city centre on Saturday afternoon, with leaders using the Woolwich attack to encourage supporters to attend.

At the same time, anti-fascist organisation Newcastle Unites has planned a counter protest in the city.

Northumbria Police said the city would be open for business as usual, although road closures may cause minor disruption.

Newcastle area commander Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert said: "We appreciate that the events in London on Thursday may have heightened community concerns about this weekend's planned protests in Newcastle.

“We are constantly monitoring the situation and will continue to adapt accordingly. “There haven't been any incidents or issues locally and there's nothing to suggest anything is going to happen here. However there are extra patrols out across the force area to reassure communities.”
