POLICE covering Europe's biggest Army base say they are carrying out high-visibility patrols to reassure military families following the murder of a solider in London.

North Yorkshire Police is offering extra reassurances to the public in Catterick Garrison and other areas with a high number of military personnel.

Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal said: “The incident that occurred in London is truly shocking and our sympathy and thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time.

“The policing response to this incident is being co-ordinated nationally and North Yorkshire Police will play its part, if required.

“North Yorkshire Police officers and PCSOs are undertaking high visibility patrols to provide extra reassurance to military personnel, their families and the wider local community.”

Mr Spittal said there was no indication of specific threats in the county.

However, he added: “People can be assured that North Yorkshire Police will remain vigilant.

“I urge residents to keep calm and not to engage in any speculation.

“As ever, our advice is to report any suspicious behaviour to North Yorkshire Police on 101. Dial 999 if it is an emergency.”

An Army spokesman for Catterick Garrison said soldiers have not been advised against wearing their uniforms in public saying instead they've been told to go about their business as normal.
