LONG-delays were experienced by rush-hour drivers this morning after part of the A66 was closed by police.
A multi-agency operation involving Durham Constabulary, Darlington Borough Council and the Highways Agency is still being carried out to clean the A66 road between Great Burdon roundabout and the new roundabout at Lingfield Point.
Police say the closure was in connection with the nearby Christian Mission Festival, which has attracted a huge number of touring caravans.
It is understood no offences have been committed.
"Dangerous driving conditions have been created as a result of excess mud and debris on the road. It is believed this has occurred due a combination of bad weather and vehicles driving on and off a site being used as a festival camp," said a spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary.
"There is full road closure in place on the A66 to allow a safe environment for the road to be thoroughly cleaned, with traffic management measures in place to assist drivers.
"It is anticipated the road will be reopened early this afternoon."
Diversions are place.
