A POPULAR cliff lift on the North Yorkshire coast has been temporarily closed following a recent inspection.
The checks on the lift on Whitby’s West Cliff revealed some corrosion on part of the shaft lining and officers at Scarborough Borough Council are working with technical experts to determine the most appropriate course of action.
However until that has been determined and further investigations have been carried out, the council has taken the lift out of service for “a few days.”
The authority’s director of service delivery Andy Skelton said: “We are aware that the cliff lift is well used by local residents and visitors to the area and we appreciate it being out of action could cause problems for older users and those with mobility problems.
“With this in mind, we are currently investigating alternatives to assist people getting up and down the cliff and in the meantime we apologise for any inconvenience the temporary closure of the lift might cause.
“We hope to have the lift back in operation in time for the spring bank holiday weekend and our engineers are working hard to try and achieve this.”
