A MAN has pleaded guilty to attempted murder following a horrific stabbing at a leisure centre gym.
Former restaurant worker Dale Pipe carried out a savage attack on his 22-year-old victim in the gym at Belle Vue Leisure Centre, in Consett, in January.
The victim suffered 16 wounds to the head, neck and chest in what is believed to be a random attack.
This morning, 20-year-old Pipe appeared before Newcastle Crown Court by videolink from Durham Prison to admit the attack.
He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and three counts of possession of an offensive weapon, including a kitchen knife and an axe.
Judge James Goss, Recorder of Newcastle, said: "This is an issue where the pressing matter is a proper investigation into his mental health."
The case was adjourned until June 24 for sentencing.
Pipe, of Thornfield Road, The Grove, Consett, was remanded in custody.
