A CYCLIST died in a collision with a lorry on the A66 tonight.

The crash took place at 6.25pm on the westbound carriageway close to the slip road for Eaglescliffe, near Stockton.

The cyclist, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the lorry, a 49-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in police custody.

Both carriageways of the A66 were closed from the Preston Farm slip road to the Long Newton slip road to allow for Cleveland Police traffic officers to investigate.

The eastbound carriageway re-opened three hours later, but the westbound carriageway is still closed.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision and who has not already spoken to police is asked to call the non-emergency number 101 and quote number 085662.
