WINGED Creatures was the theme of an workshop held at the weekend to celebrate this summer’s Lindisfarne Gospels exhibiton.
Inspired by the Gospels, professional artist Vicky Holbrough led the hour-long sessions in the Great Kitchen at Durham Cathedral for individuals and families, assisting them in creating pieces of work.
A selection of the artwork will be chosen for inclusion in the Lindisfarne Gospels Durham exhibition at Durham University’s Palace Green Library from July 1 to September 30.
Winged creatures was chosen as the theme of the workshop as the evangelist portraits in the manuscript all feature a winged creature – a winged man, a winged ox, an eagle and a winged lion. Participants made 3D sculptures using wire and paper.
Another workshop, Celtic Sculpture, will be held on Saturday, May 25 at The Bridge Centre for Visual Arts in Darlington.
Taking the celtic style and imagery from the Lindisfarne Gospels as inspiration, this workshop will involve creating a design and then using various techniques and tools to carve into plaster.
The hour long drop-in sessions will take place at 10am, 11am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
