A CHEERLEADING troop has bagged 16 out of a possible 18 trophies at a regional competition.
Lazer Cheer Academy, based in Colburn Leisure Centre, near Catterick Garrison, last weekend took part in the Northern Regional Champion competition at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena and brought home 15 gold medals and a fourth place trophy.
The squad celebrated three champion titles for its parent, senior and full squad routines.
Cheer academy director Michelle Robbins said: “It was our fourth time at the Newcastle arena and it was good preparation for our upcoming international competition in July.
“We took 98 cheerleaders in six different age and ability groups, including the All Stars higher level team, which starts at 12 years. The youngest category is for the Tiny team, aged four to five.
“This was their biggest competition so far, with around 1,700 competitors, and to be placed in 16 out of the 18 routines they performed is fantastic.”
“They are doing really well – I’m proud of them.”
She added: “As we have just finished a competition it is a good time for new people to come and have a go - it is great fun and isn’t all about throwing pom-poms around. We have an ability group to suit all ages and levels of fitness.”
