JOURNALISM students at a North-East university have been honoured at an inaugural awards ceremony.
The awards, held at Teesside University, celebrated the work of journalism students throughout their time at the university.
Students were nominated for a number of awards, including best news portfolio, highest National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) pre-entry exam results, and best sports journalism portfolio.
Prizes included work experience on The Daily Mail, Sky News, Daily Mirror, The Sun’s Fabulous magazine and Press Gazette, as well as local titles The Northern Echo, Evening Gazette and Hartlepool Mail.
A number of editors and media professionals attended the awards, including The Northern Echo’s deputy editor, Chris Lloyd, and reporter and Teesside University graduate, Hannah Bryan, who presented final year Multimedia Journalism student, Jamie Burton, with his award for best issues and campaigning journalist.
Mr Burton, from Marske-by-the-Sea, east Cleveland, said: “It’s definitely nice to be recognised because the whole awards thing was unexpected so it’s good to have something material in your hand to show for all the hard work.”
Professor Gerda Roper, Dean of the School of Arts and Media, said: “It is a tribute to the calibre of our students and our courses here at Teesside that we have such prestigious media partners who are willing to give their time and expertise to give new young journalists that extra boost of work experience and placements which is so valuable when they are starting out in their careers.”
