CULT indie rockers Maximo Park have announced a surprise gig as part of the region-wide Festival of the North East.
The band will perform an intimate gig in aid of the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle on June 12.
The venue is run by volunteers and has been hit hard by funding cuts this year so the band offered to be volunteers for the night and put on a gig.
Paul Smith, Maximo Park’s Billingham-born frontman, said: “I'm a frequent visitor to the Star and Shadow and wholeheartedly endorse its mission to engage in DIY cultural practices that lie away from the mainstream.
“Its radical approach to programming and its volunteer-run ethos is a good example of what can be done if people with common goals work together.”
Maximo Park will be supported by Waskerley Way and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Star and Shadow Cinema.
The event is part of the Festival of the North East: a month-long celebration of North East creativity throughout June, to herald the arrival of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
Tickets to the Maximo Park concert cost £10 and go on sale 9am on Saturday, June 1 via www.wegottickets.com.
