MARKETS across the North-East are taking part in a national campaign to boost local economy and increase visitors to the high-street.

The Love Your Local Market campaign, which was launched today (Wednesday, May 15), runs until Wednesday, May 29 and aims to showcase the best of local produce, design and innovation.

More than 25 markets across the region are taking part, including Darlington, which was voted the nation’s favourite market at the National Association of British Market Authorities (Nabma) Market of the Year competition.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign Local Growth Minister, Mark Prisk, said: “Markets can be the beating heart of their communities and a force for good in the local economy.

"That's why we're backing the Love your Local Market fortnight. It is a great opportunity for town centres and for aspiring business owners to give trading a go."

The campaign gives budding traders a chance to tout their wares with 3,000 free or subsidised stalls available to those who want to try trading for the first time in a low-cost, low-risk retail environment.
