A WOMAN would welcome back her partner who assaulted her and called her a slag, a court heard.

Angela Cowan initially said she was shocked and frightened at Wayne Martin Robinson’s actions but then withdrew her police complaint and said Robinson was welcome home, Clare Irving, prosecuting, told Peterlee Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday, May 15).

In a statement outlined to the court, Ms Cowan said she was still upset at the attack but Robinson had promised it wouldn’t happen again and she still wanted to be with him.

The couple met in December, shortly before Robinson, 24, was jailed for a previous assault.

However, Cowan decided to “give him a chance” and Robinson moved into her home after he was freed from prison in April, Ms Irving said.

Then, last Friday (May 10), after both had been drinking, Robinson punched his partner, called her a slag and dragged her across the floor by her hair.

Bruised, Ms Cowan locked him out and called the police.

In a police interview, Robinson, of Cooper Square, Gilesgate, Durham, said he loved Ms Cowan and they had a good relationship but on a drunkenness scale of one to ten, he had been about a seven.

He admitted assault.

Wayne Bradley, for Robinson, said his client had shown remorse for his actions and a desire to address the underlying causes of his behaviour; and he hoped to continue his relationship with Ms Cowan.

Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of a probation service report. Robinson was granted conditional bail and will be sentenced next month.
