A YOUTH theatre is closing after 15 years of giving a town’s youngsters somewhere to get off the street and express their creativity.
Willington Youth Theatre has announced it will close due to a drop in membership and a cut in public funding and grants for arts organisations.
The theatre was formed by Christina Jackson in 1998 and she and her family have run it ever since.
In a statement, the youth theatre committee said: “It is with deep regret that we announce the closure of the group and the dissolution of the charity.
“The group never thought they would get past their first year let alone the 15 years they have been going.
“In their 10th year the group almost closed through lack of funding but was saved at the 11th hour.
“This last setback is down to the present economic climate which has not only affected the group’s finances but the membership of the group.
“The committee wish to thank all those who have supported Willington Youth Theatre over the last 15 years, it has been greatly appreciated.”
The group began when nine teenagers wanted to do a show and turned to Mrs Jackson and three other adults for support.
The group, which began with a £200 grant, started in Sunnybrow Methodist Chapel but moved to Willington Methodist Church several years ago.
Brian Myers, president of the youth theatre, said: “For 15 years the youth theatre has given young people a place to go where they can have fun and enjoy themselves while also creating something to entertain the town.
“I have seen for myself the difference the theatre has made to children, it has provided activities and entertainment and kept youngsters off the streets.”
County councillor for Willington Joe Buckham praised the efforts of the Jackson family in the youth theatre.
He said: “They have dedicated themselves to it and the benefit to the children they have worked with has been huge.
“Their productions were unique and the theatre will be a big loss to Willington.”
Mrs Jackson said: “I have been very upset at the decision we have had to make but I am consoled by the fact that over 15 years I have touched so many young peoples’ lives and given them the opportunities they have had within Willington Youth Theatre."
