LIBERAL Democrats on Labour-led Durham County Council have elected a new leader.
Councillor Amanda Hopgood, who represents Newton Hall, was elected unopposed; succeeding Coun Nigel Martin, who stood down after 24 years in the job.
May’s local elections saw the Lib Dems slump from 21 councillors to just nine, while Labour increased its tally from 67 to 94.
But Coun Martin said his exit had nothing to do with the results; as he had made the decision to stand down some months before.
Coun Hopgood said the election was disappointing but the group would “start again”.
She said: “My priority at the moment is to stabilise everything.
“We will continue to question decisions where appropriate and support when necessary.
“It’s a challenge. I’m looking forward to it.”
She paid tribute to Coun Martin, who she said had been a tremendous ambassador for the party and left big shoes for her to fill.
Coun Hopgood is also Deputy Mayor of Durham and is currently having to stand in for Coun John Wilkinson, who is prevented from completing his year as mayor after he lost his council seat in the elections.
A new mayor will be chosen by Durham’s charter trustees at a meeting on Wednesday, May 22.
Labour has pledged to have the roles of Mayor of Durham and chairman of Durham County Council filled by one person, to cut costs.
