Historic online maps showing the shape of North Yorkshire have been extended by the county council to cover the 1950s.
The maps now include the Ordnance Survey's publication from that decade at a scale of about 1:10,000. They can be found on the authority’s website ww.northyorks.gov.uk, look for historic maps online, and follow the instructions.
These maps were originally surveyed and drawn up between 1953 and 1958. They have now been added to others available covering the periods1846-1863, 1889-1899, 1907-1924, 1930-1954. Several, including the latest addition, cover the whole county.
The historic maps have a base map layer from the County Series maps, which began in about 1850.
By zooming in to a location using the on-screen tools or using the address search, you can now see changes to the mapping of North Yorkshire over 100 years and reveal a fascinating glimpse of how the area changed over that time.
