A COMMUNITY choir set up to celebrate the return of a medieval manuscript to its spiritual home has performed a concert.
The Lindisfarne Gospels Community Choir played Durham Cathedral earlier today (Sunday, May 12).
It was formed, with the backing of the Northern Echo, ahead of this summer’s Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition in Durham.
The gospels, created on Lindisfarne, in Northumberland, in the Eighth Century in honour of St Cuthbert, will be loaned to Palace Green library, in Durham, from July to September, with up to 200,000 visitors expected.
Organisers are planning a special programme of events and activities to accompany the loan.
Palace Green library will host an exhibition telling the story of St Cuthbert and the Gospels: their creation, journey across the region and global significance.
Anglo-Saxon artefacts will be on display, along with some of Britain's most significant medieval texts, including the St Cuthbert and Durham Gospels.
There will be exhibitions, performances, workshops, conferences and pilgrimages.
A thousand-strong choir will perform a spectacular concert on Palace Green in July.
New members are being sought. For more information, call 0300-026-1948 or visit the website at lindisfarne gospels.com
