A SCHOOL football team is celebrating after winning a national cup final at a 39,000-seater stadium.
The under-14s boys’ team at St Leonard’s Catholic School, in Durham City, lifted the English Schools’ Football Association’s Premier League Cup at Hillsborough, the home ground of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
They beat St Ignatius College, of Enfield, 2-1 in the final on Tuesday (May 7) with goals from James Moore and Elliott Embleton.
Teacher Andrew Bell, the team’s coach, said: “Everyone did fantastically well. It was a massive effort. We’re very proud of them.”
This year, the team also won the Chester-le-Street and Washington Schools’ District League, winning every game, and the Consett Ironworks Cup.
