TWO North East cafes have developed their own specialties in preparation for a week of celebrating sandwiches.
Bradley Burn Farm Shop near Wolsingham, County Durham, and Whitfield Village Pantry near Hexham, Northumberland, will sell special sandwiches in their cafes throughout National Sandwich Week - from May 12 to 19.
Chris Stephenson at Bradley Burn's specialist sandwich will consist of bread made in Esh Winning and Cotherstone Cheese from Teesdale with chutney home made in West Auckland.
David Coverdale’s Whitfield Pantry effort is made of their own organic bread, Burnlaw Farm beef, reared a few hundred metres from the café, Northumberland cheese and homemade horseradish.
Both cafes work closely with the Love Food project which supports the production, promotion, use and appreciation of locally grown or reared food in Teesdale, Weardale, the Allen Valleys and Derwentside.
Mr Stephenson, whose family have farmed at Bradley Burn since 1939, said: “We always try and use as much local produce in our food as possible. “So being able to mark National Sandwich Week in a way which promotes the fantastic local produce we have in this area is great.”
Both sandwiches will be among a range sold at both cafes.
