A NORTH-East college is the latest sponsor to get a run for its money agreeing to support Middlesbrough’s 5k and 2k Riverside Run.

Organised by Middlesbrough Council, the run attracts a combination of club runners, fitness fanatics, fundraisers and couch potatoes, many of them raising much-needed funds for local charities.

And now Middlesbrough College has got on board to support the two races.

To mark the sponsorship agreement, former Middlesbrough and Darlington star Neil Maddison, who now coaches for the college, joined college Principal and Chief Executive Mike Hopkins and Cllr Nicky Walker, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, to try out the route.

Mr Hopkins said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be sponsoring one of Teesside’s landmark sporting events, especially one that literally runs by our doorstep.”

Neil Maddison, who was part of Bryan Robson’s Boro side that won promotion to the Premier League in 1998, will take part in the 5k along with former Boro stars Mark Proctor and Bernie Slaven.

He said: “It’s ironic that my career has brought me back to within a goal-kick of the Riverside Stadium and it’s great that both the college and Boro are supporting this amazing event.”

Both 5km and 2km races of the Middlesbrough College Riverside Run will take place on the morning of Sunday, June 2.
