POLICE are fighting plans by two supermarket chains to open new branches in York, claiming they will fuel street drinking and crime.
Morrisons and Sainsbury’s want to open new stores in the city centre, but police are objecting to their licensing applications.
Local licensing officer PC Mick Wilkinson said: “Street drinkers attempt to obtain their alcohol from stores of this type, both legally and illegally, which contributes to antisocial behaviour.
“Late-night revellers are often seen purchasing alcohol and attempting to smuggle this into neighbouring city-centre venues, where consumption goes unchecked.”
