CELEBRATIONS to mark the 150th anniversary of an iconic North East market building have been launched by some of the traders who make their living there today.

Stall holders from Darlington’s Covered Market dressed in Victorian garb to recreate a picture found in the council archives showing market life more than 100 years ago.

The market building, with its landmark clock tower, opened to the public in 1863 and has since served generations of shoppers, as well as becoming a focal point for Darlington.

The Victorian-themed 150th anniversary celebrations will take place in the Covered Market and the adjoining market square on the weekend on June 7 and 8.

Some of the events planned by a committee made up of stall holders and market officers from Darlington Borough Council include fair games, Victorian workshops and musical performances, an old-fashioned carousel, penny farthings, juggling, Punch and Judy and a Victorian rat catcher.

There will also be an ox roast, a giant birthday cake in the shape of the building and commemorative plates, which are being made for the event.

The Covered Market was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, who also designed the Natural History Museum, in London.

Peter Bulmer opened The Waterhouse Kitchen, named for the architect, less than a month ago, but he has already thrown himself into helping to make the anniversary celebrations a success.

He said: “The building is iconic of Darlington, it represents Darlington. We want people to come in and look at the building because it is what makes the town.”

His comments were echoed by florist Julie Sperring, who said: “It’s an outstanding building and it is the history of the town. There’s a lot planned for the weekend and we hope people will join us.”

Markets manager Peter Wilson, who has been involved with the market for more than 40 years, said: “It’s been a fantastic experience to be involved with something that has served the public for generations.

“It has been a public servant.”

Organisers are looking for people who have pictures or memories of the market over the decades to contribute to a time capsule that will form part of the celebrations. Items can be sent to Darlington markets, Darlington Borough Council, Old Town Hall, DL1 5PN or email emma.waring@darlington.gov.uk or call 01325-388027.
