WARNING letters will be sent to 12 motorists after they were caught speeding in Weardale by police.
Officers from the Weardale Neighbourhood Policing Team deployed their speed matrix in Stanhope last week to deter speeders and catch motorists exceeding the limit.
The matrix, operated by Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), was stationed at Rose Terrace to monitor traffic travelling in both directions.
A spokesman for the policing team said: “There were 12 out of a total of 88 vehicles monitored that were recorded as travelling above the limit and they will now receive a warning letter in the post.”
The speed matrix is a regular tool used by police and local communities in the Wear Valley to battle speeding.
The equipment consists of a large sign that flashes up the motorist’s speed as they pass and their registration plate is also logged.
Offenders will receive a warning letter from police explaining they were seen travelling above the limit, with persistent speeders likely to face further action such as being taken to court.
Tackling speeding vehicles is one of the main priorities for police in the area as directed by the public.
Residents said motorists were slowing down because they saw the matrix and a uniformed officer by the roadside, and also said the 30mph signs should be moved to raise awareness for motorists.
