AN ELDERLY woman has died following a fire at her North-East home.

The 83-year-old was alone in her bungalow when the blaze broke out at around 1am this morning. (Friday March 29)

Firefighters were at Langdale Place, Peterlee, County Durham, within seven minutes, but were unable to save her.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock at her death.

Ada Burns, 87, who has lived next door for around 15 years, said: “It is terrible. I have had an awful shock. I have been quite upset about it.

“It is awful for something like to happen to her, especially at Easter time.”

Neighbours said the woman had two previous fires at her home in recent months.

Police and fire officers have launched a joined investigation to establish the exact cause of the fire, which is thought to have started in her bedroom.

Sheila Laidlaw, 77, said: “I knew her to say ‘hello’ to. I would wave and she would wave back. She was a nice enough woman.

“It is a terrible shock, the poor soul. I must congratulate the police and fire service for the job they have done. They have come to see all of the people on the row to make sure we are alright. They have been spot on, 100 per cent.”

The alarm was raised through Durham County Council’s emergency warden service, Care Connect.

Earlier today the property was cordoned off for the forensic investigation to take place.

Adam Hall, group manager with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue, said: “When we arrived the bungalow was heavily smoke logged and there was an intense fire going on. Crews had to force entry to get inside.

“One elderly lady was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this time. It a reminder to people of the importance of having smoke alarms in their homes and that they are checked on a regular basis.”
