A WOMAN has died in a house fire in the early hours of this morning.

Three fire crews were called to the bungalow in Langdale Place, Peterlee, County Durham, at 1am.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Steve Cumming, station manager with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said:  “Upon arrival the crews found the bungalow heavily smoke-logged with an intensive fire in the bedroom.

“Despite the fire crews forcing entry and extinguishing the fire quickly, one person was discovered in the bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A joint investigation into the incident is being carried out with Peterlee CID and a police cordon was around the property this morning.
