BARONESS Tanni Grey-Thompson says she was forced to drag her wheelchair up 12 flights of stairs after the lift in the flats where she lives was broken.

The Northern Echo: LORDS HONOUR: Dame Tanni Grey- Thompson

The Redcar-based former paralympian, who now sits in the House of Lords, arrived back at her London home in the borough of Southwark at 11pm on Wednesday night.

She said she emailed the company which manages the property, but when no one responded, she decided to drag her wheelchair up the stairs behind her.

Speaking to The Times, she said: "If you can walk up the stairs it would take you five minutes, but it took me 25 minutes as I had to balance my chair on each step and then haul it up. It's pretty unpleasant.

"Most people wouldn't be able to do it. If I couldn't have crawled up the stairs then what would I have done? Slept the night in the foyer?"

She Tweeted later that she received "two lovely bruises" on her legs for her troubles, adding that she "bounced" down the stairs the following morning.
