FORMER Newcastle and Sunderland players will battle it out on the golf course just days before the current Premier League stars meet on the pitch.

A Newcastle United v Sunderland charity golf day is to be held in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the former Newcastle United manager’s cancer charity, and the Foundation of Light, the charity arm of Sunderland AFC.

The challenge will feature former players John Beresford and Kevin Ball as the non-playing team captains and up for grabs will be the Konect Derby Cup.

The event will be held at Ramside Hall Golf Club, near Durham City, on Wednesday, April 10, before the Tyne-Wear derby the following Sunday.

There will be a question-and-answer session with Beresford and Ball afterwards.

Pauline Buglass, from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: “This is a fantastic way to harness the passion both sets of fans have for their clubs and we’re grateful to everyone involved.

“It will be a wonderful day and no doubt the golf will be as strongly contested as the derby game itself.”
