A PROFESSIONAL artist will help people create pieces inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels at a series of workshops.

Vicky Holbrough will lead three sessions around the region in which individuals and families can create works based on the illuminated manuscript.

Some of the artworks will be selected to go on display in the exhibition when the beautifully-illustrated volume makes its eagerly-awaited return to Durham in the summer.

The Gospels will be on show at the Palace Green Library, in Durham City, from July 1 to September 30.

Dr Keith Bartlett, Lindisfarne Gospels programme director, said: "The Lindisfarne Gospels is a beautiful book and the illuminated pages with their portraits, decoration and ornamental text represent the pinnacle of achievement of Anglo-Saxon Northumbrian art.

"This is a great opportunity for residents of all ages to take part in a creative project and to work alongside a professional artist.

"A selection of artworks will be exhibited within Palace Green Library for the duration of the exhibition."

The first workshop will take place at Berwick Maltings on April 7, when participants will use clay modelling to combine text and illustration.

The Museum of Hartlepool will host the second workshop on April 28, using papers, textures and fabrics to design simple books and their covers.

Winged Creatures is the theme of the third and final workshop on May 18 in the Great Kitchen, Durham Cathedral. Taking the Gospels as inspiration, this workshop will involve creating a winged creature sculpture using wire and paper.

Hour-long drop-in sessions will take place at 10am, 11am, 12,30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Anyone aged eight and over can take part, although children must be accompanied. Email janedancerltd@aol.com for further details.
