A PRISONER found dead in his jail cell had appeared to be under the influence of drugs for several days before he died, an inquest has heard.
Kevin Raynor, 39, died at Durham Prison on September 8, 2011 where he was being held as he awaited trial.
Coroner Andrew Tweddle earlier this week said Mr Raynor died as a result of the effects of two drugs he used to tackle heroin and alcohol abuse.
Prisoner Steve Ramsey told the hearing: “For a couple of days before he died he appeared stoned. He said he wasn’t getting enough methadone in prison.”
The inquest heard that prisoners tried to get hold of drugs as they could be sold within the jail.
Prison officer Aaron Dwyer said he was told Mr Raynor had not got up and went to his cell. He found Mr Raynor snoring and thought he was okay.
Some time later another prison guard Shaun Rooney raised the alarm and medical staff were called.
The inquest continues tomorrow (Thursday, March 28).
