SIX young people took to a karting track to test their motoring skills in beach buggies they had built themselves.

The project has seen six unemployed youths from Redcar develop their experience and educational skills with help from the Territorial Army.

The group were able to tear around Teesside Karting in Middlesbrough today to check out their engineering skills.

Supported by the Prince of Wales’ charities, Business in the Community, and the Redcar and Cleveland Connexions Team, the project has been the first of three to be held in the area.

Six Territorial Army (TA) soldiers from Newton Aycliffe-based 102 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) (Volunteers) have given practical engineering skills and advice during the build and now the young people were able to drive their newly built buggies.

The next nine-week course is planned to start on Tuesday, April 23 and a further course will be held in October.

Unemployed young people who are interested in joining the next course should contact “Tuned In” in Redcar on 01642-771112 or email connexions@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
