A PEDESTRIAN has died after being hit by four separate vehicles near Whitby.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision in which 43-year-old Darren Charles Stawman of Bridlington was killed.

It happened at around 8.30pm on Sunday, on the A174 near Mickleby, at its junction with the B1266.

Mr Stawman, who was wearing dark clothing, was hit by a grey Alfa Romeo 147 car travelling towards Whitby.

He was subsequently hit by three further vehicles, a grey Nissan X-trail, a black Peugeot 308 and a black Peugeot 407. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for seven hours while police investigators examined the scene, re-opening around 3.35am on Monday.

Traffic Sergeant Hamish Halloway said: “We are doing everything we can to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr Stawman’s tragic death.

“If anybody witnessed the collision then please contact the police. I am also asking people to come forward who were in the Mickleby area, particularly near the junction of the A174 and B1266, just prior to the collision."

Anyone who can help should ring the police on 101.
