AN elderly woman who was badly hurt in a car accident at the end of February has died in hospital as a result of the injuries she sustained.

Elizabeth Jane Allen, 81, of Skipton Close, Ferryhill, suffered chest injuries after the car in which she was a passenger was in collision with a Ford Transit van.

The car, a VW Fox, was being driven by her 82-year-old husband William, who also required hospital treatment after the crash, on the A167 at the junction with St Cuthbert's Way, Newton Aycliffe, on February 28.

A spokesman for Durham Police said Mrs Allen died in the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, on Friday.

He said a post mortem confirmed she had died as the result of injuries she suffered in the accident.

An inquest into Mrs Allen's death was opened and adjourned at Middlesbrough Coroner's Court today (Tuesday, March 26).

The 47-year-old driver of the Transit van and his passenger were both uninjured in the incident.
