The latest North Yorkshire town to benefit from a £70m superfast broadband investment is Bedale.

County council leader John Weighell, who represents the town, said: "I trust the entrepreneurial spirit in Bedale will fully exploit the opportunities it brings.”

North Yorkshire is the first county to use government funds to extend its roll-out to local communities and aims that 90 per cent of properties will have access by the end of 2014.

Businessman John Dunwell of the Bedale Copy Shop, said: "I’ll be able to improve response time to customers.

"Now there is no reason we can’t trade on a national basis with the level playing field superfast broadband creates.”

Carl Les, chairman of the Superfast project said: “Investment in fibre and faster broadband speeds will be a key part of our economic revival as we finally shrug off the effects of the economic downturn and create a better, more prosperous future."

Ainderby Steeple, near Northallerton was the first in the county to get the superfast broadband.

Work is due to be carried out in Sleights and Ripon in the near future. Along with York and Malton, installations at Selby are also well underway.
