A VACANCY has arisen in Middlesbrough’s Pallister Ward following the resignation of Councillor Barry Coppinger to take up the role of Cleveland’s first Police and Crime Commissioner.
He stepped down from his Executive portfolio for Social Care at Middlesbrough Council with immediate effect in November, but indicated that he would continue to carry out his ward duties until arrangements were in place for a by-election.
Middlesbrough’s Returning Officer has now put in motion the procedure to hold an election to fill the vacancy, and Mr Coppinger’s resignation has been accepted.
Upon receipt of two requests in writing from electors within the Middlesbrough area, a date will be set for the election to be held within 35 days.
If no request is made, the seat will remain vacant until it is next due to be contested.
