IT will be a case of blood, sweat and gears when a professional cycle race returns to Durham City.

The historic cathedral city is one of 11 venues around the country that have been chosen to host the Cycling Tour Series .

The event will take place on Thursday May 16 at 7pm.

Riders will compete over a route starting and finishing at Durham School and taking in Margery Lane, Crossgate Bank, South Street and Grove Street.

A Durham County Council spokesman said: “The Durham leg of the race, which takes in steep hills, tight turns and cobbled streets, has been described in previous years as ‘purgatory’ by the cyclists taking part.

“During the Tour Series the cyclists will compete across a number of rural and city centre courses, including Durham, where you are invited to come along and see the race as it passes through the city streets."

The fifth season of The Tour Series takes place over five weeks during May and June. This will be the race’s fourth visit to Durham.
