HUNDREDS of bikers will take to the roads on Easter Sunday to deliver eggs and toys to sick children.

The annual Easter Egg Run, organised by Durham Constabulary’s motorcycle police, is to take place on Easter Sunday.

The rally, first staged in 2005, sees hundreds of riders and their police escort deliver toys and eggs to children spending Easter in hospital. Last year’s run also raised £900 for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Riders will assemble from 8.45am at the park-and-ride on the A690 at Carrville, just off the A1(M) at Durham.

Police will collect any donations for the young patients before the ride sets off at 9.30am and heads down the A167 to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The convoy will then return to visit the children’s ward at the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, followed by refreshments at the nearby police headquarters at Aykley Heads.

Sgt Iain Rodgers, head of the force’s motorcycle section, said: "The Easter Egg Run is now a well-established event on the local biking calendar.

"We had over 800 riders taking part last year, the best turnout yet. And it was fantastic on the ride to see lots of people waiting patiently at the side of the road to cheer and wave us all on."

Anyone interested in taking part is asked to register on www.bikewise.org.uk to give organisers an idea of the numbers to expect.

Meanwhile, the force has also announced that the annual Bikewise show will take place at police headquarters in Durham on Sunday, July 28.
