“HOW do I love thee? Let me count the beers.”
It may not be an enticing chat up line, but it is the title of a new range of beers to be brewed in the North-East.
The set will be created over coming months at the Sonnet 43 Brew House, in Coxhoe, County Durham.
The microbrewery is named in honour of the most famous work of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who was born nearby.
The 19th century poet’s Sonnet 43 begins: ‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways’.
The new beers will see new ingredients and brewing techniques used to create a number of limited edition ales based on different aspects of Browning’s work and life.
The first, Hope End – a rum-infused ginger pale ale inspired by the Browning’s family history of owning sugar plantations in Jamaica and named after their Hertfordshire estate – will be available from next month.
Brewery owner Mark Hird said: “The new How Do I Love Thee range is our chance to not only experiment with new flavours and higher ABVs but to pay homage to the rich literary history of the North-East as well.”
