MOTHER’S Day was extra special for one mum, after her daughter won a themed competition.

Dr Julie Herring, 41, of Aykley Heads, Durham City, was treated to a Boots makeover, a Toni & Guy haircut and a new outfit from Monsoon after her daughter, Poppy, won a shopping centre contest.

The ten-year-old, a pupil at St Godric’s RC Primary School, in Newton Hall, won the ‘Put Mum in the Picture’ drawing contest, run by the Prince Bishops shopping centre.

The competition, which was open to children aged six to ten, received more than 600 entries.

As part of the prize package, Poppy won a new bike and digital camera.

Dr Herring said: “Poppy always produces such lovely pictures and she has hopes of becoming an artist when she is older.

“I’m delighted she’s won the competition as she really deserves recognition for her talent.

“It was a lovely surprise to hear of my prizes. I’m thrilled with my makeover, as I don’t get to pamper myself very often.”

Second place went to Emily Salmon, eight of Blue Coat CofE School, and Mollie Urwin, nine, of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Primary School, in Esh Winning, was third.

The winners were chosen by John and Cynthia Wilkinson, the Mayor and Mayoress of Durham.
