A CHARITY bike ride is being held to raise money for a community gym.

Volunteers and members of Leadgate Community Centre are riding 100 miles on an exercise bike on Good Friday.

The event is to raise funds for the £5,000 needed to pay for the installation of fitness equipment last year.

Community centre treasurer Jennifer Walker said: “The gym is for the health and well being of the people in the surrounding area.

“We want to get the money paid off as soon as possible and extra money raised will go towards to upkeep of the centre to make sure the people of Leadgate have got a great community centre they can use.

“This one is very popular and we want to make sure it is well looked after.”

Durham county councillors Watts Stelling and Alan Shield have also pledged to take part.

Coun Stelling said: “The community has embraced this gym and the useage is good so we are confident we will pay for the equipment without a shadow of a doubt.”
