ABOUT 200 North-East workers could lose their jobs after an electronics firm announced it was moving to the US.
RFMD, in Newton Aycliffe, this afternoon told staff their jobs were at risk, after the firm said it was transferring work to its plant in Greensborough, North Carolina.
The company, which makes semi-conductors for mobile phones, said it will close its factory, on Heighington Lane Business Park, by the end of 2013, if it cannot find a buyer.
The company said it was phasing out manufacturing at Newton Aycliffe, where it makes cellular switches, which would save around £13m a year.
Bob Bruggeworth, RFMD president and chief executive, said: “We are enjoying increasing demand and we expect these changes to have a lasting positive effect on the company, resulting in meaningful expansion.”
