OFFICIALS at a County Durham skiing area are planning improvements to ensure winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy a perfect piste.
The Harwood Ski Federation has operated two 500m slopes near Langdon Beck, in upper Teesdale, for more than 50 years.
Officials say they need to replace 20-year-old fencing used to trap snow on the piste and in the tow-rope areas.
Councillor Barbara Harrison, who represents Barnard Castle West on Durham County Council, contributed £2,000 from her neighbourhood budget and Teesdale Action Partnership agreed a further £750 to cover the cost.
A spokesman for the federation explained: “The slope relies on the correct weather conditions to ensure snow is trapped on the piste and tow areas and to assist with the trapping of snow, fences have been installed.
“The project will replace the fencing over the 500m piste, ensuring that when the weather is favourable, maximum snow is available on the piste.”
The volunteer-run ski federation operates as a not-for-profit company and boasts more than 200 members.
When the slopes are open for skiing and snowboarding, they attract between 50 and 100 enthusiasts a day.
