A REPORTED serious sexual assault on a young teenage girl in a North Yorkshire resort is now believed not to have happened.
Detectives have completed a full investigation into a report of a sex attack on a girl aged under 16 in Whitby town centre two months ago.
The alleged victim had said she was attacked by an unknown man in an alleyway between New Quay Road and Baxtergate, sometime between 8.30pm and 9pm on September 12.
And nine days later a teenage boy was arrested in connection with the incident. He was later bailed pending further enquiries.
However police revealed yesterday that their investigation had now concluded and the teenage boy had been released without charge. No further action will be taken.
Police said their investigation had been thorough and extensive and had concluded the circumstances of the incident were not as initially reported - and that there were no threats in existence to the wider community.
“We again thank the people of Whitby for the support they gave to the investigation,” said a spokesman.
“ We hope any associated concerns and fears within the community and beyond can now be allayed.”
Specialist police support and partner agencies have been involved throughout the inquiry and are understood to be in contact with the original complainant.
